"Presbyopia" refers to the age-related decline in near vision, usually starting around 40–45 years old. People begin to find it hard to read fine print and need to hold their phones or newspapers farther away to see clearly. Good lighting improves visibility, and the reading distance gradually increases with age.

Once presbyopia occurs, it's time to get a pair of reading glasses to ease eye strain. But how should you choose your first pair of reading glasses?

The lenses should be relatively large. Because near vision requires convergence, and reading or writing causes the eyes to shift downward and slightly inward (about 2.5mm), the optical center should accommodate this. Typically, the pupil falls around the midline of the lens when looking straight. To provide a sufficient visual field, the lens height should be over 30mm. For women, the OCD should be around 58–61mm; for men, 61–64mm. This often requires large-diameter lenses with significant inward adjustment of the optical center during lens crafting.

Reading glasses are worn and removed more frequently than regular glasses, so durability is crucial. From age 40, the reading addition typically increases by +0.50D every 5 years (e.g., +1.00D at 40, +1.50D at 45, etc.). Frames should be made of strong or flexible materials, with anti-corrosion coatings, scratch-resistant surfaces, and high-quality hard-coating on lenses. A good pair of reading glasses should maintain its shape and clarity for at least 2 years.

Choosing the right reading glasses is crucial for first-time wearers. Everyone’s facial structure, arm length, visual habits, and presbyopic degree are different—and sometimes one eye may have a different prescription than the other. In some cases, presbyopia is accompanied by myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. Wearing the wrong glasses can cause eye strain or headaches instead of relief.
