When people hear “pure titanium”, they often assume it means 100% titanium. In fact, “pure titanium” refers to titanium with a purity of 89% or higher. It is not necessary to reach 100% to qualify as pure titanium. Since their introduction, pure titanium eyeglass frames have become popular because of their lightweight feel, excellent corrosion resistance, high melting point, strong stability, and skin-friendly properties.

However, because pure titanium is less elastic and more difficult to weld, many manufacturers mix in metals such as aluminum, vanadium, or molybdenum to create titanium alloys. Some dishonest sellers then market alloy frames as pure titanium, misleading customers and inflating profits.

From a cost perspective, pure titanium frames are significantly more expensive than titanium alloy frames. To help you avoid being tricked, here are four simple ways to identify real pure titanium eyeglass frames:

· Titanium alloy frames have a density of about 8.9 g/cm³.

· Pure titanium frames weigh only 4.5 g/cm³.

This means pure titanium frames are about half the weight of alloy frames. Simply holding them in your hand should give you a clear difference.

· Pure titanium frames use oxygen-free butt welding, which leaves a step-shaped weld mark.

· Alloy frames use spot welding, leaving a slope-shaped weld mark.

Carefully checking the nose pad arms and welding area can reveal whether the frame is truly pure titanium.

Pure titanium should not have titanium directly contacting titanium at the hinge joint, as this causes wrinkling and stiffness. Instead, genuine titanium frames often include two thin spacer pads at the hinge to separate the upper and lower parts.

If you see spacer pads, it’s a strong sign of pure titanium.

Loosen the hinge and use a magnet near the temple arms:

· If the frame reacts and moves, it is not pure titanium.

· If there is no magnetic attraction, it is likely pure titanium.
